In the fall of 1998, Cassia County School District offered a brand new program for students who did not speak English or who are very limited. Modeled after Portland School District's nationally recognized Newcomer Center, our Newcomer Center has become even more successful. Students are given a language test and if they qualify, they are eligible to attend the school for a period of 9 months or more. The students are instructed by a staff of expert teachers and paraprofessionals. The curriculum's emphasis is on English, reading, math and computer skills. Each classroom has a set of computers. Students who leave the school are tested to make sure they have the basic survival English skills needed to be successful in their home schools. Busing and food services are also provided. Non-English speaking students can register at the school anytime during the year. |
